Thematic JMBC Workshop on Modelling and Measuring of Multi-phase Flow Phenomena in 

Micro-fluidic  and thin-film systems

 

Introduction

Micro-fluidic systems and thin films will play a crucial role in high-tech applications and processes

of the future.  With the introduction of immersion lithography ASML has also entered the world of

thin film systems and multi-phase flow in small diameter channels.

Since the positioning accuracy of our scanners is of the order of nanometers, control and

understanding of two-phase flow phenomena is essential. In the Netherlands nowadays several

research groups pay attention to modelling and measuring of multi-phase flow phenomena at a

much smaller scale than the traditional “oil & gas” and “reactor cooling” applications.  Traditional

research area’s like “coating technology” and more recently “printing technology” stimulated

research on thin film systems and contact line dynamics for quite a long time, but still numerical

 modelling of these complicated multi-scale processes is rather new and as a consequence,

different approaches and techniques are extensively explored and refined without showing a clear

winner yet. With the aid of advanced experimental techniques, like micro-PIV, it is possible to

visualize small scale flow phenomena. These techniques can support strongly modelling activities

by providing detailed validation data.

 

Aim of the workshop

This workshop should bring together all experts in the field of Multi-scale multi-phase flow, with

the intention to exchange ideas, methods and approaches to describe, measure and simulate

these phenomena accurately enough to be used by industry for the design and optimization of

micro-fluidic multi-phase and thin film systems.

 

JMBC contact groups

Three contact groups within the JMBC:  Micro-fluidics, Two-phase flow, and Computational Fluid

Dynamics are active in this research field. However, each of them will approach this common

theme from a different perspective. With this joint event we hope to create new initiatives for

mutual co-operation and bright ideas for new developments.
