Cambridge - Leiden: easyMeeting on Quantum Matter
Cambridge-Leiden easyMeeting on Quantum Matter
Quantum matter is the area within condensed matter physics in which quantum effects play a prominent role. Active research focuses on those phenomena that cannot be explained by the framework that was developed in the 20th century, in such sub-fields as high temperature superconductivity, quantum criticality, spin-orbital coupling effects, topological quantum phases, and ultra-cold atom systems.
The list of observations without proper explanation appears to be growing rather than shrinking, and fundamentally new concepts will have to be developed to describe the surprising physical properties of these systems.
The aim of the easyMeeting workshop is to have an interdisciplinary meeting of quantum matter physicist, concentrated around the British and Dutch communities. The formal presentations will reflect a mixture of theory and experiment in all fields of quantum matter, and will allow both established experts and talented young physicists to present an overview of their work. Together with informal discussions the easyMeeting seeks to stimulate the interaction between junior and senior participants, between theory and experiment, and last but not least, between the different geographical regions.
The Cambridge-Leiden connection
hints at successful collaborations from the far and recent past, and hopefully
new collaborations will be initiated which are by no means bounded to these two
institutions. With traveling between the
