The beach is accessible everywhere, so you can walk along the beach as
far as you want. Take bus 40 to the beach
of Noordwijk.
Or take bus 31 to the beach
of Katwijk.
Bus 40 and 31 both stop close to hotel "Bastion".
BICYCLE RIDE
You can cycle to the
beach via Katwijk or via the very nice dune area near
Wassenaar. See maps in the Lorentz Center

THE DUTCH
BULB AREA
The flowering Dutch
bulb area is undoubtedly a beautiful place in springtime. A lot of fields
behind the dunes between Leiden and Haarlem
are then covered with flowers. You can make a trip through the flowering bulbfields around Sassenheim, Noordwijkwerhout and Lisse or
make a visit to:

in Lisse:
80 acres of flowershows, 6 million tulips, narcissi, daffodils,
hyacinths and other flower bulbs, ancient trees, flowering shrubs, ponds en
fountains.

Flower parade
with decorated floats on 25 April 2009:
Every year, on a Saturday, in April the Flower Parade of the Dutch bulb area
moves from Noordwijk to Haarlem. The big
floats and the motorcars lavishly covered with flowers parade through the
flowering Dutch bulb area, along a 40 km route.

The Naturalis museum is the tall building behind the

The historic building that houses
the Museum Boerhaave has had various functions
through the ages. The original Saint Caecilia Convent
dates back to the beginning of the 15th century. In 1596, the Convent was
converted into a home for lunatics and plague victims. It was here that Herman Boerhaave gave his celebrated sick-bed lectures, attracting
medical students to Leiden
from all over the world.

The archaeological collection of the National museum of Antiquities originates
from the Netherlands, Egypt, the Near East and the world of classical
antiquity. The collection includes Dutch items of the
Prehistory and the Middle Ages, an Egyptian temple, mummies, papyrus
artifacts, and many items from the Roman times.

The Volkenkundig
museum houses many interesting
exhibits on foreign cultures. The history of these collections is closely
linked to that of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. King William I
(1772-1843) sent men overseas to collect material and information for Dutch
museums. Now, the museum contains artifacts from Japan,
Indonesia, the South Seas,
Africa, Peru, Tibet, Siberia,
America and
other places.

Between
1640 and 1800 the Lakenhal was a center of wool and textile
(laken) commerce. But since 1874 the Lakenhal has functioned as a museum, focusing on the
history of Leiden, including the Spanish siege

possesses many exotic plants, including tropical ones. You can book a tour or
just walk around and relax by the waterside of the Singel.
De Burcht, Burgsteeg 14.
In the middle of the center of Leiden, between the old and the new Rhine you
will find the Burcht, a medieval fortification
probably stemming from the 12th century. Seated on top of a hill,
the Burcht provides a great view of the city center's
rooftops and churches. There is no entrance fee and you are free to walk around
and on it any time of the day.

From April
to October the Rembrandt Shipping Company runs daily boat trips round the city
of Leiden. However, on request it is also possible to sail in the months of
March and November. The boats leave from the Beestenmarkt,
which is a small square on the route from Leiden Central Station to the city
center.

DEN HAAG
Den Haag (The Hague) is home to the Dutch
government and the Royal family of Orange.
It is just 15 minutes by train: trains leave from Leiden to Den Haag six times an hour. There

In the centre of The Hague, directly adjacent to the government buildings on
the Hofvijver, the mansion of Johan Maurits, Count of Nassau Siegen,
governor-general of Dutch Brazil, arose in about 1640. The strictly classical
building was designed and built by Jacob van Campen
and Pieter Post, the two most important Dutch architects of their time. Since
1822, the `Mauritshuis' has housed the Royal Cabinet
of Paintings, one of the most famous collections in the world, containing works
by Vermeer (including his famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring"),
Rembrandt, Jan Steen and Frans Hals.

This state museum houses an eclectic

planetarium burnt down, the Omniversum was built in
its place as the first Imax dome film theatre in Europe.

This Panorama is one of the world's finest and largest surviving panoramas
depicting the fishing village Scheveningen with its
sweeping view of the sea, a wide beach and the dunes of Holland. It was painted in 1880 by Hendrik Willem Mesdag, his wife
and several other painters. This mass medium of the 19th century
still creates an amazing impression of Scheveningen
two centuries ago.

that served the court of Holland well into the 19th century. It

All nations contributed towards the construction of the Peace Palace by making available
characteristic products of their soil and art of industry, in this way
symbolizing the collaboration of the nations in the foundation of this
"Temple of Peace". This beautiful building is home to the Permanent
Court of Arbitration, the UN International Court of Justice, the Peace Palace
Library (one of the most famous international Law libraries in the world), and
the Academy of international law. Take one of the Palace's daily tours if you
want to be sure to see the best of the palace and learn about its international
history.
AMSTERDAM
It takes only 35 minutes by train from Leiden to Amsterdam
Central Station. Trains depart regularly (every 15 minutes) by Schiphol and Haarlem. If you take the train by Haarlem
in the spring, you will see the tulip fields in full bloom during your ride. On
arrival in Amsterdam CS you are right in the center of Amsterdam. Just roam around and enjoy the
atmosphere of the city, or follow one of our suggestions:
Canal Boat Tours.
For a refreshingly different view of Amsterdam,
try a canal boat tour. The canals provide a leisurely pace from which to
observe Amsterdam's
architecture and street life. You can find a convenient departure either in the
daytime or evening hours from many locations throughout the city. There are
even canal boat taxis that can take you directly to your destination. You'll
notice numerous tour operators near Central Station and along the Damrak downtown.

The Rijksmuseum houses the largest collection of art and history in the Netherlands.
Its collection is based around the paintings of the
seventeenth-century in the Dutch
Republic: the Golden Age.
The collection includes twenty works by Rembrandt, four by Vermeer and numerous
other paintings by artists such as Frans Hals and Jan Steen. Displayed at the very heart of the
museum is Rembrandt's Nacht Wacht
(Night Watch). But the museum houses more than just paintings: there are
collections of silver, delftware, doll’s houses, prints, drawings, Asiatic art
and a recent completely renovated presentation on Dutch history.

This museum houses the world's largest collection of
works and letters by Vincent van Gogh. The museum also has a large collection

The Stedelijk Museum opened its doors in 1895
exhibiting eccentric pieces of art and curiosa. Since the early 70's it has
been a museum exclusively for modern art. Among the collection you will find

Young Italians, the minimalists and Mondriaan.

The Tropenmuseum is the largest anthropological museum in the Netherlands.
