State-of-the-art AI will significantly change the way humans and machines interact and gives rise to a new interaction paradigm based on voice and other modalities (e.g., voice user interfaces, natural user interfaces). This interaction paradigm essentially makes machines more social, as they use modalities for social interaction that are most familiar to us. However, next-generation interactive AI systems should become more proactive and collaborate in a personalised way that is transparent to their human users. To this end, we need to develop new theories and models of the social loop between users and machines, and identify similarities and differences between human-human and human-machine loops. The social loop provides inspiration for the modelling and realization of social machines based on advanced AI techniques. It also can provide a starting point for discussing the quality of social interaction that we expect of such machines. Another key question is to what extent human-human interaction can be used as a model of human-machine interaction. In the workshop we aim to identify if, and how, a social loop for human-machine interaction differs from the human-human version and which aspects are key to guarantee the high quality of the social interactions that social machines engage in. We aim to address these questions by discussing the current state-of-the-art in Social AI and the steps that are needed to build on current AI techniques to realize social machines that meet user expectations in the wild.
