In conjunction with the BeCoM and MORE&LESS Horizon Europe projects, the ECATS Association are running a workshop event in partnership with the Lorentz Center to develop a whitepaper on “Mitigating Contrail Impact” from a 5 day workshop bringing together researchers from across the aviation sector and stakeholders in reducing the environmental impact of aviation.
ECATS has identified three main focus areas during this workshop: 1) Scientific understanding and challenges in predictions, i.e., prediction of sensitive regions for persistent contrail formation; 2) observations and validation of contrail avoidance/climate impact reduction; 3) Implementation/legislation aspects, e.g., pilot perspectives and strategies towards implementation. In each focus area, the state-of-the-art scientific progress, the challenges and the gaps to be filled in will be addressed.
This workshop will be carried out through a programme of guest speakers, interactive discussions with attendees, research examples through exhibitions, and industry visits. The first half of the week will be focused on scene setting and cross disciplinary topics for discussion, providing attendees with some technical background across themes of importance they may be less familiar with than their day-to-day expertise. The second half of the week will swing the focus onto collaborative work in the preparation of the whitepaper’s first draft.
