Scientific objectives of the workshop:
· to bring together scientists from the different materials communities, and to explore common physical phenomena that are becoming recognised in fracture of disordered materials;
· to further narrow the gap between experiments that can be done with ever increasing resolution, and multiscale modeling of fracture and pattern formation;
· to assess, in the light of the above, the value and practical relevance of fundamental physics approaches to fracture and disorder, notably on fracture growth processes and surface morphology;
· to see what communalities remain, which fundamental differences appear, and what new generic science emerges when studies on patterns in fracture are extended to tough and soft materials.
The organisation aims at about 40 participants active in the field, and at a format such as to maximize interaction and informal discussion. To set the scene 15 key lectures by internationally leading scientists have been planned, covering both generic approaches (physics, simulation,…) and several materia classes (metals, concrete, rock/seismics, polymers and other soft matter,…).
