Summary BINC: Societal Impact of New Technology

On Thursday 8 October 2015 Museum Boerhaave and the Lorentz Center organize a discussion evening on the impact of new technology on the design of our society. Advancing digitization, according to recent studies, leads in twenty years to a replacement of half the current jobs file. How are we preparing for the post-industrial world that is awaiting us – faster than we may believe?

New technology always has its impact on its surrounding world. Producing and/or communicating differently induce a transition to a different society. Developments in Biotechnology, Information technology, Nanotechnology, and Cognitive technology not only are lightning fast, they increasingly flow together: BINC. As a result, we urgently need to prepare for a post-industrial world that radically differs from what we are used to. What is the influence of BINC on our democracy? How does it relate to human dignity? To our freedom?

The public debate is part of an international workshop organized by the Lorentz Center that week. Under the title 'An Emerging Technological and Societal Transition: Preparing for the Post-Industrial World', a mixed group of scientists, engineers, economists, lawyers, philosophers, journalists and artists are discussing the rather urgent question on which scientific and technological challenges and conflicts we are about to face. The discussions shall result in a document (white paper) that provides policy makers and the media with a starting point.

Around twenty science communication MSc students of Leiden University will participate in the Lorentz Center workshop. In addition honors students of Leiden University will join the BINC public debate in Museum Boerhaave. The evening starts with several short presentations resulting in a tantalizing statement. The subsequent open debate with the audience is led by Melanie Peters, Director of the Rathenau Institute.

Museum Boerhaave is the Dutch National Museum for the History of Science and Medicine. Its aim is to improve the societal support base for science in the Netherlands. Museum Boerhaave always seeks to connect its activities with current events (www.museumboerhaave.nl).

The Lorentz Center is a Dutch international workshop center that is hosted by Leiden University. It organizes scientific workshops, to promote innovative research at the scientific frontiers as well as on complex societal challenges (www.lorentzcenter.nl).
