Information and Communication Technology for Sustainability (ICT 4 S)

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has a central role to play in the transition to a sustainable society. ICT offers us a rich set of tools to collect and analyze diverse sources of data to help us develop and share new solutions, and increasingly, ICT provides new low-energy alternatives to physically moving people and goods around the planet. But at the same time, ICT can seduce us into patterns of overconsumption and waste, as we buy and discard an ever-growing set of gadgets.

Our aim is to identify a core set of theories and tools from multiple disciplines, representing the things that every student in this field ought to be familiar with. We will then invite members of the research community, along with 25-30 postgraduate students, to come to the summer school in the Netherlands, to participate in the first delivery of this curriculum.

Topics that will be covered are:

●        Requirements for Sustainability: Imagining the sustainable society (Birgit Penzenstadler)

●        Climate Change and energy: the role of ICT in the transition to a post-carbon society (Steve Easterbrook)

●        Systems Thinking: Modeling the dynamics of ICT and sustainability (Lorenz Hilty)

●        Lifecycle Assessment: Measuring benefits and impacts (Chris Preist)

●        The social and environmental footprint of the internet (Daniel Schien)

●        Green Software Engineering: Designing software with a sustainable intent (Sjaak Brinkkemper)

●        The enablement potential of ICT (Vlad Coroma)

●        Smart Sustainable Cities (Mattias Höjer)

●        Green living: Sustainable buildings, transport and food (Sam Mann)

●        Abundance: how we harness ICT’s capacity to shape behavior and action (Marie Ferrario)

●        Limits: Social resilience and the re-invention of social institutions (Daniel Pargman)

The summer school will run for five days. Each morning and afternoon will begin with a short seminar or invited talk (60 minutes max) on a new topic, followed by a set of practical exercises and case studies related to that topic. At the end of each day, the schedule will include a 90- minute session for participants to work together in small teams (2-5 people, each with a mix of junior and senior people), to work on research papers based on ideas covered in the summer school. Over the course of the week, each group will develop a research idea to end up with a complete paper draft, to be presented in the final afternoon.
