Reading Subtitles: Insights from Eye Tracking

15 - 19 December 2025

Venue: Lorentz Center@lambda

If you are invited or already registered for this workshop, you have received login details by email.

The call for participation is now open, until September 15, 2025. Please note that your participation is at the discretion of the organizers. You will be informed on their decision by October 6, 2025.

This workshop sets the stage for collaborative eye tracking research on subtitle reading of translated content. It aims to define key practices and standards for data collection, analysis, and sharing, in line with the FAIR principles. Participants will share their research, interact actively throughout the week, and work together to document methodologies, establish comparable parameters, and develop resources for future research.

Workshop aims

The workshop's main aim is to set the foundation for collecting, processing, analysing, and publishing studies on the reading of translated content. To pave the way for the research agenda and the configuration of a research network, the workshop will allow organisers and participants to:

  • Document good practices for reception research on subtitle reading in line with the FAIR Data Principles of Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability;
  • Agree and define parameters that allow for comparison and replication;
  • Establish capacity-building exercises to incentivise standardisation and data reuse.

We welcome applications from PhD students, early-career and senior researchers actively involved in eye-tracking research, subtitling, and media accessibility. Participants are expected to attend the full workshop. Participation is free, but participants will need to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses.

We look forward to shaping the future of subtitle research with you!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This workshop focuses on improving the reliability and comparability of eye-tracking studies on subtitle reading. Through collaborative sessions, we aim to define standards for data collection and analysis, promote FAIR-aligned practices, and build a sustainable research network. Participants will engage in hands-on activities and share their own research experience to develop a shared research agenda and draft a position paper outlining recommendations for replicable and comparable studies.
